RED BARN RADIO WELCOMES THE DARREN ZANCAN BAND 3/16 AT 8 PMBehind the heartbreaks and life altering moments is a man, guitar in hand, strumming away, soothing the stuffy air of a crowded venue with his harmonica, singing a song for the person who meant the most to him in life - his father, who Darren lost after a battle with cancer. Darren Zancan grew up in a musical household where he started singing at the age of 3. He would perform anywhere he could - church, on stage or in his house. His passion to entertain people was evident from a young age, and it drove him toward not only music, but TV and the big screen. He’s already achieved great success, opening for the likes of Candlebox, Tyler Hilton (One Tree Hill, Walk The Line) and Brett Scallions (lead singer of Fuel). He’s performed at Seacrest Studios, founded by Ryan Seacrest, and headlined shows at Hard Rock Nashville and Chicago. In 2007, Darren joined the set of “Days of Our Lives,” after winning the reality show “I Wanna Be a Soapstar.” He played the

RED BARN RADIO WELCOMES THE TURINOS 02/03/16 AT 8 PMMatt Turino grew up playing old-time and Cajun fiddle tunes with his father Tom, a clawhammer banjo player and button accordionist. Tom has also studied music in, and has played the music of India on vina, of Peru on kena and charango, of Mexico on guitar and vihuela, and of Zimbabwe on mbira. These and other influences come together in unique ways in the tunes on this album which the Turinos perform on fiddle, five-string banjo, guitar, and percussion, accompanied by the powerful bass playing of J.B. Faires. As a family tradition, Matt and Tom enjoy composing new tunes that they consider an extension of old-time music, but listeners often comment on the Cajun-influenced rhythms, and the chord progressions often do not fit the old-timey mold. Selected from their favorites composed in recent years, some of the pieces on the album are played in a driving string band style while others shift to a more lyrical mood. The Turinos perform as a duo, and form the nuc

RED BARN RADIO WELCOMES WONKY TONK 1/27 AT 8 PMJasmine Lorraine “Wonky Tonk” Poole grew up in the hard scrabble portion of the American heartland. Kentucky, to be precise. Her world of loss and longing is familiar terrain for lovers of country, bluegrass and folk music but, just as Kentucky can be viewed as a bridge between north and south, Wonk’s music blends elements of Indie/Alternative rock with old school country. It’s hard to separate the wonk from the tonk. Nor should you try. Wonk’s influences, John Prine, Guy Clark, Modest Mouse and Loretta Lynn among them (especially Loretta), are apparent but her music is not derivative. Loretta, Skeeter Davis, Iris Dement and Jenny Lewis come to mind but none of her comparables quite pin her down. Wonk is her own cowgirl. “Cowgirls get up in the morning, decide what to do and do it”, she was told as a child. Fiercely independent but naturally shy Jasmine uses her alter ego and blue cowgirl boots to deal with the notion of impossibly cruel but equally exhilarating

They’ve released two EPs, “Extra Better” in 2013, and then “Light of Day” in 2014.Through relentless touring, they’ve become mainstays of the Midwest Americana scene. In September of 2015, they set ten highway-tested, fine-tuned songs loose in the confines of LA LA Land Studios. The result is “Midwest Heart/Southern Blues”. The new album is a gritty, upbeat collection of songs, full of characters who were developed while staring over the dash of a beat up Ford van cruising through towns in the South and Midwest, whose better days are behind them. RED BARN RADIO WELCOMES THE ROUGH & TUMBLE 01/06/16 AT 8 PMThe Rough & Tumble are two scarecrows in a cornfield, two pairs of hands stealing the same piece of candy, a dust devil that traveled seven states to get to you only to make you cry. They are the only surviving memory of the first bike accident in the history of bikes and the skinned knees and the broken hearts. They love eating fish but always feel bad about it when they put them in the pan, especially when the eyes are still intact. They wake up every morning and work on that crossword puzzle written in a forgotten language that only gets harder the more you forget. The Rough & Tumble are here to lock eyes with you in a crowded room, smile and wink at you.ArtsPlace, 161 N Mill st., Lexington, KY [40507www.redbarnradio.com|mysp.ac/1K2l]
