You can thank LeBron James for making this happen.
Kendrick Lamar has followed up To Pimp a Butterfly with untitled unmastered., out today (March 4). You may recognize some tracks from his late-night TV performances from 2014 onward—like "Untitled 2," from his January appearance on The Tonight Show, where he goes, "I can put a rapper on life support / Guaranteed something that none of you want." (Hah.) Regardless, untitled unmastered. is Kendrick feeling his way through the cosmic jazz that ultimately informed TPAB, as performed by the likes of Terrace Martin, Thundercat and Bilal, among others.
Kendrick has talked before about this "chamber of material" from the TPAB sessions, where "sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album." But you can thank LeBron James for those songs seeing the light of day. After he caught Kendrick's live set at the 2016 Grammys, he tweeted at TDE label boss Anthony Tiffith. "Yo @dangerookipawaa after that @kendricklamar Grammy performance, you have to release those untitled tracks asap!!! What's up? Talk to me."
