There are more secrets to enigmatic entertainer than the identity of Laura Palmer’s murderer...
David Lynch is a multi-skilled entertainer as well as an all-around mysterious gentleman. The director, musician and painter who never unbuttons the top of his shirt has provided us with enough cryptic storylines, cult movies, suspicious characters and bold artistic choices over the years. And while his latest project—a documentary called My Beautiful Broken Brain—premieres on Netflix today (March 18), we’re also remembering the lesser-known facts about the Godfather of the surreal side of Hollywood. And with that, here are 8 facts you might not know about the enigmatic Mr. Lynch.
He Produced a New Documentary About a Fellow Filmmaker
For several decades movie fans enjoyed getting lost inside the labyrinths of David Lynch’s mind, so it's no wonder he finds the human brain "truly fascinating" and eagerly produced the documentary My Beautiful Broken Brain that chronicles the process of recovery of Dutch-French filmmaker Lotje Sodderland after a hemorrhagic stroke. The world that Lotje has to rediscover may be stranger than anything Lynch has ever come up with, and we can’t wait to embark on that journey.
He’s a Coffee Fanatic
David Lynch is a total coffee geek. (His characters gotta get their coffee-consuming traits from somebody, right?) He launched his very own coffee brand in 2006 called Signature Cup Coffee and likes to get creative with marketing. Like that time he got Mattel all mad when he voiced-over Barbie in 2011 for one of his trippy Signature Cup Coffee commercials. Take a look at all of his coffee-related videos here.
He Was a Child-Smoker
No one was shocked when Lynch revealed that he loved playing with fire when he was a kid, but what about Baby David’s fascination with cigarettes? Yep, he says he’s been smoking since he was five…only to get a bust of him smoking for his recent 70th birthday from an LA artist Carl Lyon. For a man who smoked his entire life, he surely aged well.
He Doesn’t Cook at Home
David thinks the smell of food can mess with his work. "I don't allow cooking in my house,” he confessed to TIME back in the '90s. “The smell. The smell of cooking—when you have drawings, or even writings—that smell would go all over my work. So I eat things that you don't have to light a fire for. Or else I order a pizza. The speed at which I eat it, it doesn't smell up the place too bad. The smell doesn't last too long."
That confession made his 2006 culinary lesson on how to properly cook quinoa even more surreal.
He Doesn’t Like Tables
Don’t expect David Lynch to join you on your next trip to IKEA on a hunt for a perfect living room table. "To my mind, most tables are too big and they're too high. They shrink the size of the room and eat into space and cause unpleasant mental activity." So as nothing was satisfying, he had to alter reality and create his own furniture in 1997 for a Swiss company casanostra ag.
He Never Records Commentaries for DVDs
If you think about buying a DVD with any of Lynch’s movies with the hope of finding an audio commentary that will explain the plot, better keep your money. Just like Steven Spielberg and the Coen Brothers, Lynch doesn’t record commentaries because he thinks it may change the way people see his movies. He also never puts chapter stops on his DVDs, because he can’t imagine anyone would want to watch them in chunks. Someone’s gotta tell him that even when viewed in full some of them leave us totally clueless on what’s going on. Not that we’re complaining!
He Let Kanye West Down
David Lynch’s always had tight connection with music. Back in 2014, Lynch was in talks with mister Yeezus himself to direct the “Blood on the Leaves” music video. But it never materialized as Lynch “didn't come up with any ideas that I thought he would like.” As Lynch explained to the The Daily Beast, “Kanye came up to the house one day. Kanye's a good guy and a great musician. I loved the song, and that's what brought us together, but I couldn't come up with ideas that thrilled either one of us."
He Did Two Buckets For ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Two people challenged him, so he threw two buckets of ice on himself. But with a twist: Laura Dern challenged him to shower himself with ice coffee, so the first bucket had an espresso shot inside. And because it’s David Lynch we’re talking about, he’s also playing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” on a trumpet in the process. He gets a second bucket right away for the nomination from Justin Theroux. And then follows Vin Diesel’s example and nominates Vladimir Putin. The Russian president is yet to accept the double challenge.
