"A lot of people use religion as a reason to be against gay people."
Ronda Rousey is the latest to speak out on boxer Manny Pacquiao, after he called people in same-sex marriages "worse than animals."
While Manny said that his comments were based on what the Bible says, Ronda referred to the Bible and the church as well. "I understand that a lot of people use religion as a reason to be against gay people, but there was no 'Thou Shall Not Be Gay,'" Ronda said to TMZ. "God never said that, and I really think that our pope now is boss.
"He was saying something the other day that religion should be all-encompassing and should be about loving everyone. And I think people take the wrong message sometimes."
In 2013, Pope Francis made headlines for saying, "When I meet a gay person, I have to distinguish between their being gay and being part of a lobby. If they accept the Lord and have goodwill, who am I to judge them?" Advocate magazine called that statement "the most LGBTQ-affirmative one the world as ever heard from the Roman Catholic Church." However, the church still opposes same-sex marriages.
Manny, who is running for a seat in the Philippines, called people in same-sex marriages "worse than animals" on a TV program by the country's station TV5. The day after he apologized, he lost his longtime Nike sponsorship. "Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community," a statement said.
