The network has opted out of using the iconic mask, much to the dismay of original film director Wes Craven.

It's the most iconic part of the original Scream movies, but MTV has chosen to not include THE mask in its new television series rebooting the horror franchise.

Check out the series trailer below—which features a brief, blurry glimpse at the serial murderer's new face at :45—that surprised fans when the black-and-white Ghostface mask didn't make an appearance:

Today, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wes Craven—who directed all four Scream movies—shares that although he allowed MTV to use his name for the series, he actually isn't very involved at all. "I just put my name on it. I was too busy to do much else," Craven tells THR.

Craven goes on to say that he doesn't exactly see eye-to-eye with MTV's decision to leave out the original Ghostface mask, remarking that even minor alterations to established franchises can be detrimental.

MTV's new mask: a little Emperor Palpatine-ish? (MTV)
"In general," Craven shares, "we didn't mess with the mask at all. It's something we didn't try to change. With Freddy [Krueger] and the New Nightmare, I felt that I probably should have stuck with the original face. [With Scream,] we just let Ghostface be Ghostface ... I'm not going to speculate in public, probably shouldn't have even mentioned it, but you know, sometimes you realize that something's not broken, so don't fix it. And that was the course we took on all the Scream films: Don't mess with that, it's just perfect." Click here to read Craven's interview.

MTV's Scream will premiere June 30.
