...And it's going to be a rom-com?!
In November 2014, John Lasseter announced that he'll be directing another sequel to the Toy Story trilogy... despite how seemingly perfect the story wrapped up (so many happy tears!).
Today, Pixar studio president Jim Morris shared that Toy Story 4 will take on a whole new, unexpected direction: It will not be a continuation of the earlier trilogy. In an interview with Disney Latino (so the below quotes are translations, keep that in mind), Morris explained that he believes Toy Story 4 is not a part of the first three films. "It is a separate story, which in turn I do not know if will be continued," he said. "Never begin a project with that in mind."
So, just how separate? It's apparently going to be a romantic comedy! "It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3. Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children. I think it will be a very good movie," Morris says.
Morris assures that the movie in its third table read boasts a script that is "evolving very well." He also adds that the fourth installment—despite appearances—was not a money grab but an "irresistable" idea for the film had simply come about. As previously reported, in addition to Lasseter, the Toy Story 4 story was conceived by Finding Nemo‘s Andrew Stanton, Monster Inc. and Up's Pete Docter and Toy Story 3‘s Lee Unkrich. Today, it was revealed that Rashida Jones and Will McCormack are writing the script.
Toy Story 4 will open in theaters June 16, 2017.
