The married power-pop duo find beauty in imperfections.

Embrace yourself. It's a message that never gets old but somehow remains the hardest to process, but one Stereosparks takes head-on.

In the midst of a hyper-manicured online world, it's not so easy to roll with day-to-day flaws. But, they're there, and bands like Stereosparks are trying to remind you they're not a bad thing, they're your thing. In just a year's time, the California-based duo has stirred a strong response, specifically with their newest single, “Misfits.” Their new EP by the same name (which comes out today), solidifies their knack for pop. Co-written with producer James Farrell, the four songs are packed with pumping rhythms and well-carved hooks (specifically on “Call Your Mama”). What makes this power-pop group special is not just Storey Anderson's jaw-dropping vocal stamina, but the duo's personal transparency within the music. Below, Marcus Anderson talks about collaborating as a married couple, moving back home, and how Stereosparks came up from defeat.

Hometown/Homebase: Chico, California

Little-known secret/big fact about Stereosparks, you guys are married. How do you make being a couple and bandmates work?

It definitely helps that we really really like each other, haha. We started playing in a band together about 4 months after we started dating. It’s been a HUGE part of our relationship since the get go. We bring out the best in each other, creatively and keep each other motivated (which is sometimes a challenge). Music is intrinsic in both of us, so making it together is pretty damn rad.

Stereosparks is a fairly new project, but you two have been making music together for the last six years. Why did you decide to change the project, and how do you feel it stands apart from your old group, Hot Mess Loves You?

This incarnation of the band is a little over a year old so, yah, it is still very new. It is where we were always heading with our previous projects, and it’s been nice to finally discover our sound and voice. Stereosparks was born during a time when we were feeling extremely defeated and dark in regards to creating music. It represents a reigniting of passion. We feel that the music we are making now is the best representation, so far, of what we are capable of and the way we see the world. It’s been a bumpy but exciting journey.

You've relocated back to California, correct? Now being back, can you feel a difference in how you approach your music after the last three years living in Nashville?

We moved back to Chico this summer after 3 amazing and explorative years in the Nashville music scene. We look at our time in the South as a HUGE learning experience. We met amazing songwriters, producers, engineers, and fellow artists that definitely inspired us to better ourselves and raise our game. It’s really easy to get caught up in seeking popularity, but we’ve realized over the years that it’s gotta be about the love and quality, otherwise we’d never be fulfilled. We’re excited about this new chapter in California. We know way more now than we did when we left.

You two have an impressive collection of covers on youtube, do you have a favorite, and how do you pick the artists you cover?

As much as we love creating original songs, we really enjoy recording covers. Our favorite cover song to perform is definitely, “Bang Bang” as it gives us the chance to get raw and crazy. It’s a rush every single time. As far as choosing covers, we don’t narrow it down to any specific artist or genre. If we like the song, and feel like we can do it any sort of justice, we record it. We have Jack White, Beyonce + James Brown and Paramore covers in the works as we speak!

You both seem like incredibly hard workers, how do you take time off?

It’s a lot of Netflix (and chill).

You just released a single, "Misfits", could you give a little background on the song?

"Misfits "is simply about celebrating and embracing our own individual uniqueness. We wrote the song last year with our friend and producer, James Farrell. It was the second song we had all written together, and it ultimately lead to the three of us to recording an EP (coming soon). We were going to wait to release “Misfits,” but when the Supreme Court ruled on marriage equality back in June, we decided to just go for it and share it that day to celebrate the news. We’ve received many messages from people around the world who have said they relate to the message. That’s all we ever wanted. Makes us feel like we did something right. We can’t wait to release the rest of the EP, there’s something in there for everyone.
