The Stone Temple Pilots frontman died in his sleep at a tour stop.
Scott Weiland, former frontman for rock bands Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, died Thursday night while on tour in Bloomington, Minnesota. He passed in his sleep, though the cause of death is unknown. He was 48.
Rocker Dave Navarro broke the news on Twitter ("So gutted, I am thinking about his family tonight"), though he deleted his tweets soon thereafter. Scott's wife, photographer Jamie Weiland, then confirmed the news to Los Angeles Times.
Stone Temple Pilots broke out in 1992 with its debut album Core, which sold 8 million copies. Rock fans and Beavis and Butthead initially accused the band for ripping off Pearl Jam, though Weiland soldiered on to further bring grunge into the mainstream. From 2003 to 2008 Weiland found renewed success as part of Velvet Revolver, playing opposite Guns 'N Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum.
Weiland was scheduled to perform with his current band the Wildabouts at Bloomington's Medina Entertainment Center. The show was canceled due to low ticket sales, according to Star Tribune, though the band had another gig scheduled the next day in Rochester, MN.
