From dancing sharks to dancing Drake, here are 5 celebrity memes that encapsulate 2015.
At times it seemed like 2015 was all about the beef: Nicki Minaj vs Miley Cyrus, Drake vs Meek Mill, Erykah Badu vs Iggy Azalea, Taylor Swift vs iTunes, etc, etc. But let’s step out of the meat market for a moment and walk into the wonderful flower garden of Internet celebrity memes that was truly blooming this year. From dancing sharks to dancing Drake, here’s your ultimate list to the best celebrity memes of 2015.
Katy Perry’s Left Shark
2015 was a good year for sharks. While Mick Fanning’s shark fight was far from fun, Katy Perry made sure to let the world fall in love with sharks, Left Shark in particular. Her now-iconic Superbowl performance featured all kinds of eye candy, including two cheerful dancing blue sharks. The next day, the Internet was mercilessly accusing Left Shark of phoning it in and sparking a full-on #leftshark meme craze. Perry’s attempt at registering Left Shark as a proper trademark sadly failed, but at least it helped her to score an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program." After the nomination, Katy tweeted “V proud of everyone involved especially #leftshark,” and even though she’s lost to FunnyOrDie.com Zack Galifianakis/Brad Pitt skit, she’s still done a lot for the sharks all over the world. Maybe it’s time for her to consider recording a Shark Week official anthem?
Dancing Drake
“You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life,” Abba promised us in “Dancing Queen.” And 2015 was the year Canadian rapping royalty and Degrassi alumni finally gave in to the Swedish quartet’s persuasions and became a dancing king we always knew he secretly was by busting a series of seriously awesome moves in his neon-lit “Hotline Bling “ video. Turns out it was just what the Internet was desperately waiting for, as in a matter of days (or more like hours) the Web was buzzing with “When she asks you to meet her family” JPGs, Drake VS Maggie Simpson GIFs and countless edits of the video where Drake was dancing to all kinds of music (from Star Wars theme to the Fraiser theme), becoming a jedi, a pizza delivery guy, a pokemon master, an old school raver and a professional tennis player. We hope that now he has a special person to report on all the new memes so his hotline keeps blinging.
Rihanna’s Dresses
It took the world much more than four-five seconds to follow all the ingenious fashion choices the Caribbean resident bad girl has made over the year. First there was a Giambattista Valli-designed pompous pink gown miss Fenty wore to the Grammys in February. Minutes after she graced the red carpet, the Internet’s fashion gurus were comparing the dress to the loofah sponges, cake toppers, lamp shades, Nicki Minaj’s haircuts, jellyfish, cupcakes, ice cream cones and, obviously, umbrellas. Clearly getting a good kick out of sparking all of this meme-making creativity, Rihanna rocked a gigantic fur-trimmed yellow cape to the Met Gala in May. The outfit was created by Chinese designer Guo Pei and took three people to help Rihanna strut in it around the Metropolitan Museum steps. All the efforts were regarded by a second wave of Rihanna-inspired memes. This time around her dress was turned into pizzas, omelets, condoms and Big Bird. At least for these several days, the Internet was too busy to remind Rihanna her eighth album is long overdue.
Lost Travolta
Pulp Fiction has been a pop culture staple for more than 20 years now. That soundtrack, these quotes, this dance and the Uma Thurman look everyone should be long-banned from using as a Halloween getup. This year Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic gave us a GIF the Internet was begging for: A confused John Travolta aka Vincent Vega. Turns out Vincent’s puzzled reaction to the Mia Wallace’s intercom system was perfect for all kinds of scenarios: Travolta’s confused while shopping for toys; he’s lost when standing behind the shower curtain during that Psycho scene and—our favorite!—totally staggered by all of Drake’s dancing.
Is it too late for Tarantino to consider inserting Travolta’s old character into Hateful Eight?
Adele Says Hello
Just like Martin Solveig did five years ago, Adele just came to say hello (and conquer the charts and break the Internet in the process). Perhaps to deal with the overly emotional lyrics of the British superstar’s single, people turned drama into comedy by mashing up “Hello” with Lionel Richie 1983’s hit of the same name. Richie was pleased by all of this sudden attention and promised he’d do his best to secure a proper duet with Adele once she’s done promoting 25. Obviously, Lionel was not the only one who managed to get a romantic phone call from Adele due to the wonders of the Internet—Adele said hello to Will Farrell’s Ron Burgundy, dogs, monkeys, kids, Mean Girls and Lady Gaga. We can’t even imagine how much her phone bill is this year!
