Director Hamish Hamilton recounted how he didn't think Katy's show was going to work on TV.
Katy Perry was one of the more eccentric yet most-watched Super Bowl Halftime shows ever with 118.5 million viewers. Despite everyone tuning in and the happy dancing sharks, Halftime Show director Hamish Hamilton didn't count it as one of his favorites and actually worried about it not even working out.
"There was one part of the Katy Perry show last year, which I was [like] 'This is never gonna work, this is terrible," he told Billboard. "It’s awful. No! Rubbish! What are you guys thinking about? That just doesn’t work on television!'"
But even though he (and probably a lot of us) thought that Katy's wacky musical world wouldn't translate well for the Halftime Show. Hamish did take a moment and kind of took back what he said.
"Actually it worked really really well," he said. Even before we got to Super Bowl Sunday, I realised that what I’d been saying was completely stupid and completely wrong."
He also added, “All the creative [input] is fairly heavily stress-tested before you get there. It just goes to show you can have opinions, but your opinion is not always right.”
Now that Coldplay's next in line to take that NFL stage, Hamilton is more than excited to have them perform.
"I think Coldplay themselves are gonna surprise a lot of people," he said. "They write great music. They're great performers. They're great individuals. They're a great band, and I think they and their energy and their positivity will surprise a lot of people in a very positive way."
