This Halloween season, we give you our best survival tips for the creepiest video games out there.
With Halloween coming up, we ask you to face your worst fears and relive that terrifying nightmare by playing your favorite scary game.
There are so many games out there that have frightening elements to them. With bloodthirsty mutants, eerie aliens, and a knife-wielding psychopath on the loose, horror video games have a way of reminding players that they’re not safe, while teaching us there’s always a chance at survival.
Even hardened gamers get scared now and then. With a creepy atmosphere, the heart-pounding music, and that jump scare waiting to happen, all the right ingredients are tossed in to keep you up all night. Make sure you hold your breath and don’t make a noise. Here are five spine-tingling lessons that teach you how to survive the most gut-wrenching experience.
Use Your Surroundings
When dealing with flesh-eating zombies, make sure you sneak around first. In The Last of Us, the tough and resourceful Joel (Troy Baker) teaches players how to use stealth tactics. When Troy needs to hunker down and use his hearing, Listen Mode comes in handy and helps him figure out where to locate his enemies. Of course, when you have to get physical, make sure there is a Molotov cocktail nearby. You also need to be smart and make better use of your sidekick too. Ellie (Ashley Johnson) can get in on the zombie-killing action by throwing objects or using her pistol.
It’s Better To Be Trigger Happy
Sometimes, a baseball bat is just not enough to survive to the next level. The House of the Dead: Overkill makes sure you remember to lock and load. The first-person shooter game allows you to go crazy and have fun during the apocalypse. There’s nothing better than dropping as many F-bombs as you want during the end of the world. If you have the option, make sure you’re carrying two weapons at the same time.
Don’t Look Back!
You can’t be a slow-thinker when a masked maniac is chasing after you. In Until Dawn, Sam (Hayden Panettiere) is wearing nothing but a towel when she’s being sought after. What do you do in this scenario? Do you run to the left and hide under the bed, hoping you haven’t been seen? Think you’ve got the guts to fight against your attacker? The gamer has to make these split-second decisions because anything can happen. Make the wrong decision though, and Samantha ends up tripping down the stairs and starts limping instead of running.
Simplicity Always Does The Trick
We have to go old-school with this one as we discuss Castlevania from the early Nintendo system. Quite possibly the best game that ever came from the NES, Castlevania taught gamers how to defend themselves against Frankenstein's Monster, the Grim Reaper, and Count Dracula. In the action-platform game, Simon Belmont uses his Magic Whip to fight against his supernatural enemies. Simon’s Stop Watch also helped out when he needed to freeze time. But be careful, you lose five hearts in the process.
Give Up On That Dream Of Being An Astronaut
Remember, when you’re out floating around in a zero gravity environment, no one in outer space can hear you scream. Make sure you have enough air because you don’t want to suffocate. Dead Space reminds the gamer to make sure they are precisely following the map and not getting lost somewhere between the never-ending hallways. And if you have to slice and dice a scary creature, make sure you’re doing it with the plasma cutter.
