Zwischenfall were a short-lived Belgian synth pop/new wave group active during the early '80s.
They formed in 1982 and initially consisted of synthesizer player Michael Sass, bassist/vocalist Martin Urban, and guitarist/drummer Stephan Kraemer. Combining electronics with traditional rock instruments, they recorded some demo songs that caught the attention of Patrick Codenys, a member of EBM pioneers Front 242. This led to a recording session at Front 242's studio, resulting in Zwischenfall's debut EP, Heute, which came out on Mask Music in 1983. The release included "Flucht," which ended up becoming a club hit. Urban left the group in 1984, and vocalist Iben Larssen and bassist Thomas Kürsten joined. With this new lineup, Zwischenfall's music had a much fuller, roomier sound, and it was also slower and closer to Italo-disco. Their single "Sandy Eyes" (backed with an English re-recording of "Flucht") was issued by Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule as well as Italian imprint Fuzz Dance. Zwischenfall's members moved on to other projects, but their songs (particularly "Flucht") endured among synth pop fans, and their complete recordings were issued on CD in 1995 as Gestern und Heute. American label Dark Entries reissued both 12"s during the 2010s. ~ Paul Simpson
