Year 5000, or Y5K, is a member of the de facto Portland-Seattle musician exchange.
Headed by Seattle-ite Mat Probasco (guitar/vocals) and supported by Oregon musicians Ritchie Young (drums) and Joel Holly (bass), Y5K is a trio in constant evolution. Their one-, four-, and eight-track basement recordings run the musical gamut: spare sampled loops to surf rock to post-punk. And their live show is as unstructured as the band itself. To maintain a level of spontaneity, a portion of their live material is written a few hours before the actual performance. Y5K has joined a handful of central Oregon bands on three compilations -- among them Songs and Sounds of Trash From Central Oregon (1997) and 6 From the Farm (1998), both released by indie label Note Farm Records. The Secret Album, Y5K's 24-song experiment in lo-fi rock, appeared on Note Farm in 1999. ~ Eric J. Iannelli
