WABANAG
Red Music From Out There
Nagwetch-Little Sun, a singer-songwriter, musician and cultural producer from Quebec, is a Wabanaki born in Gaspesia Peninsula Mik'maq country (Gesgapegiag). In the 1960s, he spent his early childhood in Mi'kmaq and Cree/Inuit territories before moving to Montreal where at an early age he started writing songs and learning guitar on his own.
In the middle of the 1990s, following a long stay in Europe where he took part in various musical projects that brought him from Paris to Italy and Spain, Belgium, Holand, Denmark and Germany, Nagwetch decided to walk his own path. He returned to Quebec/Canada, worked as cultural producer in Montreal and started studying and researching actively Native American music.
It is on a tour in Scandinavia that he met with the musicians who helped him put together Wabanag, his first foray into writing songs inspired by the cultural heritage of the Wabanaki people.
In 1999, the EP " Indian Rock" is recorded. The band starts soon touring locally and creating a strong fan base, which will demonstrate to be loyal over the years. With the new Millennium, Wabanag becomes the "ambassadors" of Faces, one of the first ethno-festivals of Scandinavia. They perform in Finland, Estonia, Russia, Denmark.
In 2004, the debut album "Ulodi" comes out. The music is more experimental, including the use of native instruments like musical bows, rattles, stones, whistles. The album is well received in Europe, especially in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The nomination of the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards comes as a surprise in 2005.
In 2013, after a break of several years, the band is back on the net and on the road with a new album. BEMIA is an invitation to walk in beauty, a Native/Aboriginal and Wabanaki way to say that the purpose of life is to learn to live in harmony with all our relations.
Whether you catch Wabanag live or are listening to their albums, you can get a real sense of Harmony - Well Being.
Tour dates are available worldwide.
