“Umbilikal”is currently based in Mendoza Argentina, but started in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
It was founded in 2007 by song writter/singer/guitarist Pablo Hirschegger and drummer Domen Jaklič, while sharing an apartment in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Soon-after, Matjaž Simončič on electric bass and Janez Valant on electric guitar joined the band. All four members were attending Ph.D. courses at the Biotechnicalfaculty at that time.
The band needed almost 2 years to get in sync and feel ready to finally make its first appearance in public on March, 2009 in a private concert at the band's rehearsal place. From then on, “Umbilikal”started participating in different gigs, festivals and competitions n Slovenia and Austria with very good critics. After the band made it to the final stage ofthe New Comer 2010 battle of bands in Graz, Austria, Matjaž Simončič left the band. Bor Hodžič, a young physicist took Matjaž's place afew months later. The new formation debuted playing the song “Dentro” live on Radio Television Slovenia (RTV) on October, 2010, where it was elected band of the week by local viewers on a year-long band competition.
"Umbilikal”contributed the song “Sentimiento” (recorded live at OrpheumTheater, Graz, Austria) to “Newcomer 2010 – The best of the battle of the bands” a 16 track compilation CD released after the annual event; and the song “Bruma” (recorded at Brickstone studio, Bilje, Slovenia) to “2011 MagmaX fest” a 7 track compilation CD including the best bands that participated in the band contest. Umbilikal played on different locations around Slovenia and Austria, when in 2011, they decided to take it to the next level and record their first album. Peter Dekleva was asked to join the team to be the producer of the album. Recording sessions started at the beginning of 2012. The recording process was long due to unfortunate events within the Dekleva family, Umbilikal's first album was finally released in late 2013. It was presented in Ljubljana and Celje on December 2013, the same month, singer/guitarist Pablo moved back to Mendoza – Argentina, where he was born.
The Argentinian version of Umbilikal was formed around April 2014 when Santiago Mosso (electric guitar), Lucas Soy (electric bass), Guillermo Puebla (drums) and Candela Amorós (back vocals) joined Pablo to keep Umbilikal alive and move forward.
"Umbilikal” was originally conceived as the concept of connection and shared roots since the lead singer was born in Argentina but from Slovenian ancestry. The band was created in an attempt to unite different aspects of Slovene and Argentine culture; and evolved enriching itself with the different musical background of all member.
