The Selfs were formed in London by future Yes bassist Chris Squire after the emergence of the Beatles.
With keyboardist Andrew Jackman, guitarist John Wheatley, drummer Martyn Adelman, and singer Chris Slater, they played live for a while in London before Squire, Adelman, and Jackman joined forces with a couple other musicians to form the mod (and later psychedelic) band the Syn, which recorded a couple of singles that are well regarded by '60s British rock collectors. Two tracks recorded onto acetate by the Selfs, the generic British Invasion-styled original "Love You" and a cover of the Who's "I Can't Explain," were eventually released in the CD era. ~ Richie Unterberger
