The Liquescent Horror began—under the name Cease to Breathe—in early 2004 with the intent to create dark and crushing doom, incorporating elements of horror.
Justin Burning and Richard Medina, both also in Fall of Empyrean, sought a more extreme outlet that entwined their affinity for horror film scores, doom metal, and depressing atmospheres. Shortly after forming, the band changed their name to avoid a conflict with another band. Additionally, the new name more coherently fit Justin and Richard's conception of the band.In 2005, they completed their first demo, So Unravels This Mortal Coil, running four tracks and 20 minutes. The demo was, for the most part, minimalistic, guitar-driven funeral doom with horror influences.

In 2009, TLH received a limited CD-R release of their first full-length album, A Funeral for Things Undying, through Russian label, Satanarsa Records. The new material—more heavily influenced by the work of film composers like Fabio Frizzi, Goblin, John Carpenter, and Richard Band—was more ambient and keyboard-based, though still fused with the nightmarish sounds and doom-and-darkness of their first demo.

The band hopes to expand their music, actively seeking to score horror and cult films and continue its coalescence between aural and visceral horror.
