Originally formed in Lincoln, NE, the Lepers are a duo (Owen Cleasby on guitar and vocals with Ken Brock on drums) whose sound runs the gamut from lo-fi wanderings à la Sonic Youth to angular, jarring work that brings to mind the more agitated experiments from the late-'80s scenes in New York and Washington, D.C. Begun in 1993, the band started as a three-piece, but has opted to stay a duo to remain focused on its artistic direction.
The band released its first album, the self-titled The Lepers, with former bassist Mark Wolberg still involved, but the two-piece group issued the second of its two full-length albums, 2002's The Love from Above on the Caulfield label, after Wolberg had left. Cleasby and Brock soldiered on, moving to Omaha in 2003 after more than a decade of plying their trade in Lincoln. Meanwhile, word of mouth regarding The Love from Above created enough buzz to allow for some subsequent touring in the Midwestern U.S. The band continued to work on its third album in 2007. ~ Christopher M.
