A guilt-ridden young woman desperate to contact her deceased brother discovers a powerful ancient relic that can control the dead.
Her dark obsession drags her into the tangled world of two warring vampire lords (ANDREW DIVOFF of LOST, WISHMASTER, and TOM SAVINI of FRIDAY THE 13TH, DAWN OF THE DEAD) each with his own sinister plans for the artifact and a hunter (JASON CARTER of BABYLON 5) who will stop at nothing to destroy it.
This chilling dark fantasy co-produced by ROBERT KURTZMAN (creator of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, KNB FX)is drenched in the shadowy atmosphere of gothic Halloween music composers, MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE. A mix of classic horror themes with modern twists promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
A History of THE DEAD MATTER Project
Before forming Midnight Syndicate, Edward Douglas directed, scored, and produced a feature-length horror film entitled, THE DEAD MATTER (1996). Driven by a strong belief in the story, the film was shot for under $2000 in Cleveland, Ohio and released with the intention of remaking the film later on a larger scale. Many of the tracks and song ideas from Douglas'score to the film would become early signature Midnight Syndicate tracks (NIGHTSTALKER, FORBIDDEN CRYPTS, EYE OF THE STORM, BORN OF THE NIGHT, VAMPIRE’S KISS). Midnight Syndicate graphic designer Mark Rakocy shot and co-produced the film and Midnight Syndicate voiceover artist and contributor Christopher Robichaud co-starred in the film.
In 2004, Douglas reunited with co-writer Tony Demci to begin what would be a two year long process of re-writing THE DEAD MATTER script and then preparing it for production, with the help of Ethan Dettenmaier of Snap Kick Productions.
In 2007, the newly created Midnight Syndicate Films partnered with Hollywood-FX legend Robert Kurtzman, his company Precinct 13 Entertainment, and producer/director Gary Jones (XENA, BOOGEYMAN 3) to begin pre-production on THE DEAD MATTER film. Production ran from August through September of 2007.
Headlining the cast is Andrew Divoff (LOST, WISHMASTER, CSI: MIAMI), Jason Carter (BABYLON 5, CHARMED), and horror film FX legend, Tom Savini (FRIDAY THE 13TH, DAWN OF THE DEAD). THE DEAD MATTER also features memorable performances by two television horror host icons, Dick COUNT GORE DEVOL Dyszel of DC's CREATURE FEATURE and Cleveland's BIG CHUCK Schodowski from the BIG CHUCK AND LIL’ JOHN SHOW.
Additional lead actors include Sean Serino (THE RAGE), Tom Nagel (THE BUTCHER, BEAST OF BRAY ROAD), CB Spencer (ALLY MCBEAL), Brian Van Camp (NEW WORLD DISORDER), and Christopher Robichaud (MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE) who reprises his role from the 1996 version. Veteran character actors Jim O’Rear (DAY OF THE DEAD) and Donna Williams (RAPTURE) round out the cast.
In August of 2008, Midnight Syndicate released a CD of music inspired by the film entitled THE DEAD MATTER: CEMETERY GATES. Similar to their other releases, the disc was an immediate hit for Halloween, earning the band praise from fans and becoming one of the most critically acclaimed CDs of their career. In April of 2010, the band released a music video for the song DARK LEGACY, featuring clips from the movie and directed by David HOUSE Greathouse. In June of 2010 the band released a second music video for the song LOST, also from the CD. The second music video was produced by 529 Films (HELLEMENTARY) and stars Donna Williams from THE DEAD MATTER.
THE DEAD MATTER was released on July 30, 2010 at Hot Topic stores nationwide in a special 3-disc set that includes THE DEAD MATTER: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK featuring the score by director, Edward Douglas and Midnight Syndicate’s greatest hits disc, HALLOWEEN MUSIC COLLECTION.
