Members in the lineup consist of lead singer and bassist Rose Lazoff, guitarist and keyboardist Jane Palajac, and drummer Jerry Miller. All three artists spent time together in another band first, Full Moon. The seven-member group was composed of six women and only one man. When Full Moon fell apart because of too heavy a work load, it didn't take long for three of their members to rejoin forces to come up with a new musical outlet, the Chronics. At first the band performed local gigs wherever there was the chance, polishing a list of original numbers on enthusiastic audiences. On-stage the members share vocals; off-stage they each work on the songwriting, though Miller and Palajac will both admit that Lazoff does most of the writing.

In 1996, the Chronics released their debut, a self-titled album that impressed reviewers. It took four years for the threesome to complete their sophomore offering, an EP titled Be Bop. Both recordings were done under the Rubra Records label.
