Two-time Stellar Award nominee Terri Carroll is a veteran international gospel recording artist, writer, businesswoman, marketer, filmmaker, internet radio show host, and actress of the stage and screen.
She has graced stages with Vicki Winans, Shirley Caesar, Fred Hammond, Juanita Bynum and The MIghty Clouds of Joy. As an independent artist, Ms. Carroll is the founder and CEO of Widow's Mite Entertainment, but Terri's story has not always been a crystal stair.
Hailing from Gary, Indiana,Terri Carroll began her professional career writing and singing commercial jingles for Chicago area radio stations at the age of 17. Brought up in the Church of God In Christ (COGIC), Terri was saturated with the Word of God by her grandmother at an early age. "We always had to sing or read a poem for the Easter and Christmas programs at church, and my granmma would read to my brother and I from the Bible when we spent the night at her house. We heard about Noah and the Ark, the Garden of Eden and Daniel in the Lion's Den, as opposed to Snow White and The Three Little Pigs. Little did I know this would be my ministerial foundation".
Terri married and began a family after leaving the Army in Europe, and she was soon introduced to the bane of her existence. Crack cocaine. This addiction plagued her for over two decades and resulted in the demise of her marriage and a life of hand to mouth hardship for herself and her three children. Even throughout this dark period, Terri continued to sing and fronted for various top jazz bands in Atlanta, GA. One day, former high school sweetheart and producer Terry Garmon knocked on the door of her ghetto apartment and asked if she wanted to do a record. "Terry Garmon was doing some work with CGI Records and wanted to do a project on me. We got signed on a demo, because they were so impressed with our record, which led to my being nominated for 2 Stellar Awards and Terry Garmon a Dove Award for his production for my debut project, "Terri Carroll". I was excited to be on the label with Vicki Winans, The Mighty Clouds of Joy and William Becton. I was invited to the Stellars at the Grand Ole' Opry, it was a dream come true!" Terri Carroll thought that she had "made it" in the music industry, but there was still another unexpected turn up ahead.
With the demise of CGI Records, Terri was left out in the cold with no knowledge of the record industry. Suddenly, the engagements dried up and she had to go and get a job to support her family. She scooped ice cream at the Atlanta airport while watching her protege's like Dottie Peeples, Shirley Caesar, and Dietrick Haddon fly off to minister all over the globe. But the same God that delivered Terri from a decades long crack cocaine addiction, opened the doors of the independent artist market and internet radio to her music. In 2004, Terri established and founded Widow's Mite Entertainment, a production company that is a vehicle to propel Terri's musical, film and internet radio offerings. "Eventually, I want Widow's Mite to be a place for other indies to come and have a platform for their music ministries and film projects. You can say that I am the guinea pig at the company, paving the way for others that will follow."
Terri Carroll has truly earned her stripes in the gospel music industry. Her brand new single #SEVEN featuring MULTIPLE Stellar Award, and Dove Award winning and Grammy nominated super-producer B. Slade, is leaping up the charts and gaining worldwide radio airplay. Terri is also working on an adaptation of her first indie film "This Is Not Your Destination". "I really have a heart to help independent artists of all sorts. With my internet radio shows The Terri Carroll Radio Show and The Music and Movie Showcase, I hope to continue to be a part of providing a space for artists , that does not exist as the norm in terrestrial radio for them. For us. I want to see the independent artist market and internet radio become a force that is self-sufficient and effiecient for breaking records and providing artists with an income from their craft."
Terri's advice to up and coming artists: "God has opened doors of success and closed doors of failure for me. He is not a respector of persons, so He can do the same thing for those who operate in His Word. It's about hard work, sacrifice and diligence, so don't give up. Don't take shortcuts, or be raggedy. Learn this business and stop looking for people to "hook you up". Have a respect for this industry and learn how to master it. Be more than just a singer, diversify your gifts and take risks. Trust God and be the best YOU you can be. Be an innovator, not an imitator. Reach!
