The folk and pop traditions of southern Italy and the Mediterranean region provide the foundation for Puglia, Italy based septet Tavernanova.
Formed in 1994, the group has continued to thrill Italian audiences with their melodic lyrics and aggressively rhythmic music. The recipients of an Italian music award as "one of the best Italian world music groups," in 1997, Tavernanova was praised by Italian magazine Music! for their "classic interplay of modern sounds and ancient cadences." Tavernanova initially represented the vision of bassist and composer Pierluigi Balducci (born October 3, 1971), a veteran sideman for such jazz and folk artists as Fioravanti, Andy J. Forest, Sarah Jane Morris, and Luis Sepulveda. Balducci left Tavernanova in 1998 to form Pierliuigi Balducci Quartethno. ~ Craig Harris
