Swingface can best be described as a contemporary group, blending the sounds of funk, swing, blues, and jazz into a mish-mash of booty shakin', foot stompin' fun for the whole family.
Covering a wide array of artists from James Cotton to Junior Wells to Son Seals and back again, Swingface keeps a "funkifized" audience one hundred percent smiling all the way home. We be Swingface, and we be doin' some funk. So watch out! Strap yourself in, don't get nothin' on ya (that you don't want).
Swingface was formed in late 1999 by Frank E. Smith (Vocals) and Erik Iverson (Bass), formerly of Bluesfish, following a two year tour of France. Frank's long resume includes his eight year residency with the infamous Frankie and the White Boys, the aforementioned France-touring Bluesfish, as well as his most recent group Home Cookin'. With long time friend and fellow former "White Boys" founder Erik, he has shared the stage with the likes of James Brown, Maceo Parker, Junior Wells and Kenny Neal, just to name a few. Upon returning to the States, the duo recruited the talent of guitarist Eric VanDuyne, veteran of the local Chicago music scene as well as the Champaign-Urbana jazz scene. Eric could be spotted playing with trombonist Tim Madden's free jazz group, legendary C-U guitar master Brian Wilkie, the University of Illinois big band, and the experimental rock group, The Superband Wasteband. Frank, a closet Freudian, described that "Eric plays better guitar than a lots of peoples that play better guitar than he does". Hmmm....
Swingface keeps their funk together by employing the fatback drums of talented skins man Kevin Johnston.
