Formed in 2007, Spred The Dub has been keeping crowds dancing all over South Florida with their own brand of "Good Time Reggae" music - infusing elements of soul, funk and r&b with a foundation of rocksteady, ska and roots reggae to create sonic landscapes and massive drum & bass riddems. They have been hard at work making a name for themselves, playing stages all over the state…from local beach bars to club venues, opening for national touring acts like Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, The Aggrolites, Passafire, The Movement and reggae legends like The Skatalites, Eek-A-Mouse, Black Uhuru and Yellowman. Their sound is sure to get people in the groove!
Originally starting out as a weekly reggae jam night at a local venue in Palm Beach, the group has slowly but surely become a mainstay in the South Florida reggae scene. In their early years as a 12-piece ensemble featuring multiple percussion players and musicians, their music was based on improvisational jams and instrumental vamps. It was this "dub" sound that became the band's musical style and eventually lead to the name Spred The Dub.
Over time this massive group of players has evolved into a smaller core unit of members.
Mick Swigert (aka Micky Vintage) has been providing the reverberated vocals and rhythmic skank that have characterized STD's sound since the earliest days of the group. Kevin "KJo" Johnson (bass/vocals) and Johnny "Fresh" Leonard (drums) are the rhythm section responsible for building the thundering riddems and funky grooves that serve as the rock solid foundation of the group's songs, and the recent addition of the horn section, Sam Szpendyk (trombone/vocals) and Markis Hernandez (saxophone/percussion), has brought a new dimension and level of musicianship to the sound. Together these players gel into one of the freshest sounds in South Florida reggae. Their set list includes a host of well-crafted original songs which range from upbeat rocksteady rhythms to thick, soul-moving roots jams. These songs coupled with their unique renditions of modern classics and rejuvenated reggae standards, help to create the "Good Time Reggae" vibes.
With several major projects in the works, the future for Spred The Dub looks very bright. Their weekly shows on Monday nights have turned Clematis St. into a hotspot for reggae music in West Palm Beach and their live show schedule has them bouncing all over the tri-county area with scattered excursions to Northern FL and the Gulf Coast. 4/20 2012 saw the release of their first full length album of original material and they are featured on the "Reggae Wave" compilation CD along with the best reggae bands in South FL, powered by reggae legends "Inner Circle".
This is the next chapter of Spred the Dub’s legacy, and with the new tunes, dubbed out covers, and hand-picked venues, you are sure to see why there will be plenty more "Good Times" to come.
