Ralph Lewis started out performing at mountain music concerts at six years old, on the same circuit as bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe. Many years later (1974 to be exact), Lewis earned a spot playing guitar in Monroe's Blue Grass Boys (though Lewis kept running his North Carolina refrigeration business). In the meantime, Lewis raised two sons, Don and Marty, teaching them guitar and banjo at an early age. The two sons and the father eventually formed a group. Don Lewis, who has played with Doc Watson and appeared on Hee Haw, plays lead on several string instruments and Ralph plays guitar and sings. Backed by a rhythm section, the group travels all over the Southeast playing their mix of bluegrass, Cajun, and rock at bars and festivals. Sons of Ralph released their first album, Grab a Root and Growl, in 2001. ~ Erik Hage
