Coaxing lo-fi majesty out of a masala of folk, punk, twee, and you-name-it, Sister Suvi entered the fray of the fertile 2000s Canadian indie rock scene and emerged with a sound distinctly (and somewhat miraculously) its own, a balance of experimental chaos and sweet melody.
The trio, featuring members from Canadian musical hubs of Toronto and Montreal, bask in unique instrumentations, making particular use of the ukulele, gleefully making anachronisms sound like the wave of the future. Comprised of Nico Dann, Merrill Garbus, and Patrick Gregoire, all three of whom sing, Sister Suvi released its debut in 2009 on Common Clouds Records. The record was swiftly singled out for praise by the indie 'zine world, earning positive reviews from Pitchfork and Tiny Mix Tapes. ~ Jason Thurston
