Shrimp City Slim, whose real name is Gary Erwin, was born in Chicago, IL, in 1953.
He learned to play piano as a teenager, and soon found himself drawn to the blues. He played in several blues combos in the Chicago region before moving to Charleston, SC, in 1983, where he set up his own record label, Erwin Music. He has released seven albums of what he calls "lowcountry blues" -- a mix of Carolina coast blues, soul, and R&B -- on Erwin, including Gone with the Wind (1992), Blues on the Beach (1994), Blue Palmetto (1996), I Work Nights (2000), Ancestor Worship (2000), and Highway 17 (2003). In recent years Slim has also worked as a radio DJ on shows specializing in blues and other southeastern musical forms. ~ Steve Leggett
