Scotland Barr & the Slow Drags are a hard-touring band from Portland, OR whose style is informed in equal parts by tale-spinning singer/songwriters, classic rock and pop of the 1970s, the formative alt-country bands of the '90s, and the more adventurous avenues of indie rock, and the result is a sound that's rooted in both past and present.
Songwriter and bandleader Scotland Barr came to Portland in 1992, and in time, while working with a handful of local bands, including Gage and Whipping Dead Horses, developed a reputation as one of the most distinctive songwriters on the city's music scene. In 2004, Barr assembled the Slow Drags as a studio project, but he and the musicians -- Zach Hinkleman on lead guitar, Bryan Daste on pedal steel, Theremin, and saxophone, Chris Hubbard on keyboards, Jordan Korach on bass, and Merrill Hale on drums -- quickly discovered a common musical bond, and they began playing clubs throughout the Northwest. In 2005, Barr & the Slow Drags released their first album, Legionnaires Disease, and began hitting the road with a vengeance, playing up and down the West Coast and through the Southwest on a regular basis. The Slow Drags' potent live show and Barr's songs helped to win the band a loyal fan following, and in 2008 they released their second album, All the Great Aviators Agree. ~ Mark Deming
