A classically trained musician, Samsera grew up in an artistic household, she was acting professionally by age 6 and writing original music by age 8.
She emerged as a recording artist in 1999 after recording vocals for Asian Dub Foundation’s album ‘Community Music’ , which reached #20 on the UK album charts. Her original music coincided with the rise of the British Asian music scene, in London.
In high demand for her booming and versatile vocals, she sang in multiple languages on international projects with artists including Kiko, Talvin Singh, Punjabi MC, Bobby Friction and Niraj Chag.
After several appearances on BBC TV and Radio, her first Drum n’ Bass project, Double ID was a huge success, televised nationally as part of the Zee TV Asian Music Awards and the BBC’s flagship multi-cultural show Network East.
Her sonorous voice and original dance tracks caught the attention of Diana Khambata a.k.a Filmi Bollygirl, part of the production duo Goonda in New York who featured Samsera their album ‘Goonda - Third World Radio’.
Samsera eventually relocated to New York City full-time. Soon recognized by New York underground music scene as the “Jump Up Queen”, Samsera improvised live at concerts all over the city with other well known musicians including DJ Nasha, Filmi Bollygirl, Karsh Kale and performing with Mumbai based band Kailasa.
It was following the release of her first American EP "The Samsera Project" in 2009, that her solo voice fully took hold. Fueled by her desire to tell compelling stories through music she collaborated with songwriter Jody Gray.
He pushed her to focus on moving her audience as effectively lyrically as she did melodically, exposing her uniquely evocative conversational style.
