The Detroit garage rock outfit Salem Witchcraft was formed in 1969 by vocalist Mark Derrick, guitarist Dennis Lasarski, drummer Bob Counters and a bassist known only as Brian.
Dressing exclusively in white -- right down to the color of their instruments -- the group became a fixture on the local festival circuit despite frequent line-up changes which saw Brian and Counters exit in 1970, replaced by singer/bassist Jim Duffy and drummer Morris O'Shaunessy; Derrick and Lasarski -- the only two remaining founding members -- quit the following year, heralding the addition of guitarist Arlan Viecelli. The revamped Salem Witchcraft soon issued their debut single, "Just Looking; " despite releasing just two more records, "Onward" and "Keep Rollin," the group continued on in various incarnations throughout the majority of the 1970s. ~ Jason Ankeny
