With her ultra-deep voice, Ruby Hunter has risen to the upper echelon of Australia's Aboriginal singers.
Best known for her collaborations with her husband, Archie Roach, Hunter successfully stepped into the spotlight on her own with a memorable debut album, Thoughts Within, in 1994. A review of a performance at a conference for the Research Center for Injury Studies at Flanders University pointed out that "the songs told stories about matters that are difficult and painful. They reminded us that behind the statistics, jargon and technical labels in our field (Self-harm, interpersonal violence and so on) are human anguish, physical suffering and courage". ~ Craig Harris
