RPLA sprang to fame when they starred on an unlikely front cover of the UK heavy metal bible Kerrang! magazine, who marketed them as a ‘Pretty Boy’ band similar to Poison and Mötley Crüe.
Not long after this appearance they emerged with a different image and admitted that they were a ‘gay’ rock band. While this should have made no difference at all it knocked the macho metal press off its stride and suddenly the rave write-ups and gig reviews disappeared, with the band suffering as a result. They became the subject of a news item on UK television about sexism/homophobia in rock and Kerrang! were singled out. Within a few weeks a small piece on them became conspicuous by its appearance in said magazine. Whatever their press relationship was, the band did themselves no favours because the music content was never strong enough to overcome even the mildest prejudice.
