POST-PUNK (70s/80s)
Rob Vogel
As the angst of Punk Rock began to fuse with the New Wave sound, a new genre was born that has perhaps had more influence on alternative rock through the decades than any other. Dubbed "Post-Punk", bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Wire, Bauhaus, and most notably Joy Division, took the straight forward ethos, tempos and spirit of punk rock, fusing it together with synths, edgy production techniques, dramatic imagery, and a heavy dose of postmodern art to give it a mood entirely its own. Interpol, Editors, The Strokes etc revived this sound in the 00s, but this is where it all began.
