Ricardo Alvarez began his saxophone studies in 1992 under the guidanceof teacher Patricio Ramirez. In 1995 he did a degree in Saxophone Performanceat the Instituto Profesional Escuela Moderna de Música (Modern School of Music) in Santiago, Chile, where he studied classicaland popular music under the guidance of teacher Alejandro Vazquez and RaulGutierrez for four years. In 1997 he began his career as a performer in theIrazú Big Band, playing Latin jazz and Cuban music. In 1998 the band took partat the International Jazz Festival in Santiago and later on performed at highlypopular events in Chile, and accompanied renowned musicians such as the pianistKenny Kirkland, the Cuban percussionist José Luis “Changuito” Quintana and theBrazilian composer Iván Lins. He stayed with the big band for four years andrecorded two albums. He also participated in “Fenómeno”, a band that focused onimprovised music. The band composed two soundtracks for the Chilean movies “Elhombre que imaginaba” and “En un lugar de la noche”. In the summer of 1997 hehad Latin jazz private tuition with Raul Gutiérrez in La Habana, Cuba, while inthe summer of 1998 he studied jazz improvisation in Koln, Germany, withsaxophonist Joachim Ullrich.

In 2000 he was invited to be part of the Cuarteto Latinoamericano deSaxofones (Latin American Saxophone Quartet) playing the altosaxophone. The group was awarded the Grants for the Development Of the Arts(FONDART) by the Government of Chile. With this prize the Quartet released theCD “Andanzas”. The CD was an effort to bring together composers whosecompositions reflected musical roots of Chilean Folklore. On August 2001 thequartet participated at the 4th Buenos Aires International Music Festival,Argentina, and performed a concertat the Opera Theater. In 2002 theQuartet obtains a new Fondart’s grant for their third CD entitled Frontiers,considered to be an important contribution to Chilean music, merit that very few groups in the country have obtained. In later years the quartet went on toperform in Costa Rica, Bolivia and in many Chilean towns.

During the following years, Ricardo Alvarez performed in the orchestras: Symphonic Orchestra of Chile, Philharmonic Orchestra of Santiago, Youth Symphonic Orchestra of Chile. As a session musician he has recorded in more than twenty records of popular singers, soundtracks and TV shows. In 2004 he took part of the group “Sonambulo” (www.sonambulo.cl), a project whichexplores the fusion of Chilean Folklore and jazz elements. In 2005 the CD“Sonambulo” sees the light, a set of Latin composition that was well receivedby the local press. From 2006 to 2010 he performed in the popular Chilean group Chico Trujillo playing in venues of the north and south of Chile. In September 2007 he performed with the Latin American Saxophone Quartet at the SanFrancisco State University, US and at other local venues. During the tour he also gave workshops of Latin American music.

In 2009 he received theBicentennial Conycit Scholarship to do a postgraduate degree in United Kingdom.In 2010 he started a Master in Jazz and Improvised Music at The University ofYork. In 2011 he received a new Scholarship from Conycit to continue hispostgraduate studies in York. After received his MA he continued with a PhD inPerformance in York where he is currently in third year. In York he hasparticipated in the York University Jazz Orchestra since 2010. He is alsoplaying with jazz groups around North England and with the group KirkiProject (saxophone and electronics). His compositions havebeen performed by the University Jazz Orchestra and Julian Arguelles Octet.

RicardoAlvarez comienza sus estudios de saxofón el año 1992 con el profesor PatricioRamírez. En el año 1995 ingresa a estudiar la carrera de InterpreteInstrumental mención saxofón en la Escuela Moderna de Música donde sedesarrolla en música popular y clásica con el profesor Raúl Gutiérrez yAlejandro Vásquez por cuatro años. En 1997 comienza su carrera como intérpreteparticipando en Irazú Big Band tocando música cubana y jazz latino. En 1998 sepresentan en el V Festival Internacional de Jazz de Santiago y en los añosposteriores en diversos escenarios de la capital y regiones del país acompañando a connotados músicosinternacionales como Ivan Lins, Kenny Kirkland y José Luis Quintana“Changuito”. Permanece en esta agrupación por cuatro años y graba dos discos para el sello CaribeanRecords. Paralelo a este grupo participa en el conjunto de música instrumental“Fenómeno” con los cuales participa en la banda sonora de las películas “ElHombre que Imaginaba” y “En un lugar de la noche”. En el año 1997 realizaestudios de saxofón y jazz latino en La Habana, Cuba con el profesor RaúlGutiérrez y en 1998 realiza una pasantía en Colonia, Alemania, con el profesorJoachim Ullrich especializado en saxofón y jazz.

Enel año 2000 ingresa al Cuarteto Latinoamericano de Saxofones tocando el saxoalto con el cual graba los discos "Andanzas" y "Fronteras"y ha realizado giras internacionales a Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica y EstadosUnidos. Entre el 2000-02 participa como músico extra en la Orquesta Sinfónicade Chile siendo dirigidos por directores como Juan Pablo Izquierdo, David DelPino y Guillermo Riffo. También ha participado en la Orquesta SinfónicaJuvenil, Orquesta Filarmónica De Santiago y Orquesta Moderna. En el año 2004-06participa del grupo Sonámbulo con el cual graba el disco del mismo nombre ycomienza a incursionar en la composición con el tema “Vals para Sofía”. Comomúsico de sesión o en conciertos ha participado con los siguientes músicos:Changuito, Ivan Lins, Marianito Mores, Angel Parra Trio, Orquesta SinfónicaJuvenil, Orquesta Filarmónica, Orquesta Moderna, Petinellis, Javiera Parra ylos Imposibles, Alvaro Henríquez, Congreso, Maria Martha Serra Lima, JoséAlfredo Fuentes, Luis Jara, Santiago All Stars, Universal Orchestra, Silvestre,González y los Asistentes, Teleradio Donoso, Malabia, Carlos Cabezas, LeoQuinteros, entre otros. Entre los años 2006-10 participa de la banda ChicoTrujillo con los que graba tres discos y se presenta en escenarios de todo elpaís, destacandose su presentación en el Festival del Huaso de Olmué del año2009.

El año 2010 recibe la beca Bicentenario Conicyt para realizar estudios de postgrado en el Reino Unido. Desde agosto de 2010 se radica en la ciudad deYork, Inglaterra donde realiza un Master en Jazz Performance primero (2010-11)y actualmente desarrolla un Doctorado en Musica. Es miembro de la Orquesta deJazz de la Universidad de York desde el año 2010 y también presenta sus propias composiciones con agrupaciones de jazz del norte de Inglaterra. Sus recientes composiciones fueron estrenadas por la Orquesta de Jazz de la Universidad de York y por el reconocido octeto de jazz británico de Julian Arguelles.
