One of the first independent, do-it-yourself pop bands of the new wave era, the Desperate Bicycles hinged around vocalist Danny Wigley, the only member to survive an ever-fluctuating line-up.
At one stage he was aided and abetted by Roger Stephens (bass), Dan Electro (guitar), Dave Papworth (drums) and Nick Stephens (keyboards), although Jeff Titley also served time behind the drumkit. In 1977 ‘Smokescreen’/‘Handlebars’ was released, featuring the two tracks in mono on both sides, on the band’s own label Refill. This set the pattern for all subsequent Desperate Bicycles product. After several singles - ‘The Medium Was Tedium’, the New Cross New Cross EP, ‘Occupied Territory’ (all 1978) and ‘Grief Is Very Private’ (1979) - the group released a well-regarded album, Remorse Code, and subsequently disbanded.
