History of Reaction /condensed version
Reaction is an indie rock band from Chicago. They have had some promising label interest, but ultimately no record deal has been made. Disappointed,
they have decided to release their recordings themselves.
It's difficult to place Reaction into one narrow category; their songs range from the driving rockers "Summer of Love" and "White Lines" to the more melodic and touching "Blue Eyes Crying". Reviewers have compared them to everything from AC/DC to Interpol and REM. Reaction stays away from genre-specific formulae.
The origin of Reaction can be traced as far back as 1981. When Jim McNaughton, Steve Cieslak, Pat Coleman and Jim Murchison found themselves in need of a drummer. Through mutual friends and interests, Mark O'Neill joined adding his steady beat. Thus completing the original lineup of Reaction.
In 1982, the band added Bob Lara on lead guitar. By 1984 the band consisted of Bob Lara, Mark O'Neill, Steve Cieslak and Jim McNaughton as Reaction was then and is today.
In 1985 the band traveled down to Atlanta to record 6 songs that were produced by Peter Buck of R.E.M. The band shopped this demo and had several indie labels interested. The band turned down a deal with Walk thru Fire records, and ultimately, the Buck produced songs were never released. In 1987 another demo was recorded that was produced by Mike Hoffmann of E*I*E*I*O.
In 1988, there was strong interest from Warner Brothers Records to the Hoffmann produced tapes.Though there was no record deal from these recordings, the band remained intact and determined. Reaction continued to play shows well into 1990 and continued working on another demo to release.
The band would be together up until 1991. When life, as it does, caused the band to move on. Never really breaking up as many bands do, Reaction remained friends over the years.
The band would be together off and on( briefly reuniting in 1995), but more off then on. In about 2003 Reaction got back together again to record material for a new cd. The band worked on new songs practicing old songs and played shows along the way. In 2004 Reaction again called upon Mike to produce the new cd. The first Reaction CD, released in 2005, is available at CDbaby. Reaction plays occasionally in and around Chicago, and will be returning to the studio soon with more material.
