Los altos índices de marginación y criminalidad de esta zonahicieron comprender a los integrantes de esta banda pionera del reggae en laCiudad de México, que este 2014 cumplen 25 años de existencia, que lacreatividad, la cultura y la educación son la mejor manera de hacer frente a lapobreza y la violencia. Visión que se ve reflejada en los 14 tracks queconforman “Luces”, su más reciente producción discográfica que actualmente seencuentran promocionando.

Su sonido es una fotografía musical de su barrio.Conformaron su identidad sonora escuchando lo mismo sonidos de origenprehispánicos, que cumbia, salsa y son jarocho, que géneros como el reggae, elska, el funk, el jazz o el rap. Sus letras dan cuenta de la exclusión social,la falta de oportunidades para los jóvenes, la normalización de la violencia, pero también de la gente que día condía lucha por sacar adelante a sus familias, su deseo de mantener vivas sus tradiciones,su gusto por la fiesta y la cábula.

Mexico City has been skanking to the cool- mestizo- reggae rhythms of the Rastrillos since 1989. Its sound was forged in the rough streets of Iztapalapa’s neighborhoods in Mexico City. The lack of resources in the area, as well as the high levels of criminality,taught the band members that education, culture and creativity are the most powerful tools to alleviate these issues, and they could play a key role in the social development of the city.

The sound of Rastrillos’ Luces is like a picture of their neighborhoods. By listening to the sounds of the street such as salsa, cumbia, reggae, ska, prehispanic music, jazz and funk, the band built its unique and powerful sound. The lyrics of this album speak of the lack of opportunities for youth, social exclusion and the quotidian use of violence, but they also address people’s will to support their families and see them succeed, the everyday struggle to maintain their identities and traditions, and their love for fiesta and joy.
