Currently, he lives in Washington, D.C. with his fiancé and their three cats, Puff, Hiro, and Pandora. In his free time, he likes to read, cook, play video games and the piano, and most of all, go to the movies. Derek is also managing a website, GFinDC.com, to help those with Gluten allergies (Celiac) find great and safe resources, restaurants, recipes, and products.

Artistically, Derek is inspired by all kinds of subject matter, including children's stories, fairytales, horror and science fiction, as well as the news, social issues, and politics. He comes from a family of teachers and believes in the power of art to educate and transform minds.

He is a huge animal lover, and is currently exploring ways through which his art can help vulnerable and endangered animals, and also support environmental and social causes around the world.
