The Turtle Island String Quartet was the first jazz group utilizing the instrumentation of a chamber music quartet to improvise.
Quartette Indigo followed in the same tradition. Consisting of Regina Carter and Marlene Rice on violins, Ron Lawrence on viola and cellist-leader Akua Dixon, Quartette Indigo performed a dozen Dixon arrangements on their recording debut, Afrika! Afrika! (on Savant) in 1997. Their music ranged from originals to "Song For My Father," "A Night In Tunisia" and Eubie Blake's "Fizz Water." ~ Scott Yanow
