If hip hop is dead, then someone needs to tell all the rising artists, the pioneers who set the foundation for them and the fans that listen to rap.
While not dead, Hip Hop does require resuscitation to revive the once fresh and captivating genre of music. In the midst of this challenging task rises P Plus, a new era MC hailing from the infamous Wild 100’s, on the South Side of Chicago. Atypical of most people’s perception of the ordinary rapper (money, cars, and groupies), P Plus is 10 years strong in the game. With every breaking moment, his vision grows clearer. Influenced by greats such as Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Bob Marley, P Plus’ mission is to bring the mix of raw emotion with true stories of the world surrounding him. “I felt like I had a message to relay. I wanted to touch other people and be able to be heard. What keeps me doing this is when I see people actually connecting and relating to what I’m saying.” Unlike many artists who favor embellished storytelling, P Plus is here to give it to you straight, with no chaser.

After leaving college to pursue music full time, P Plus quickly engrained music into every aspect of his life. His main focus was developing his song writing skills and live performances. Following the guidance from industry figures such as Master P who said “No matter what you do, do it for the people and the people will love you for it.”, P Plus quickly learned how to humble himself while still selling himself on the mic. One of his many accomplishments to date was being chosen as one of the Midwest spokespersons for the marketing campaign for Ice T’s energy drink, Liquid Ice, which included a national radio campaign and a Midwest tour.

One of his many accomplishments while perfecting his craft was being chosen as one of the Midwest spokespersons for the marketing campaign for Ice T’s energy drink, Liquid Ice, which included a national radio campaign and a Midwest tour. The tour not only allowed P Plus to gain experience and a taste of the limelight, but to also expand his fan base that now spreads from Chicago to St. Louis, to Gary and the twin cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul. When reflecting on his ability to appeal to a variety of audience he is quick to note his overall goal. I’m not just trying to be a hood artist or a pop artist, I want to be felt by everybody. I’m going for whoever can relate or enjoy what I’m saying.”

This mastering of diversity of his craft can be showcased with two of his most noteworthy yet polar opposite songs, “Dying to Live” and “Chi Holds Me Down.” “Dying to Live” is a poignantly crafted story with the timelessness of “Brenda’s Got a Baby.” P Plus developed the concept after seeing his 13 year old cousin get pregnant and made the song to reflect the impact the hood often has on young women. “She was dying to live, to get out in the streets, what was so glamorous but she didn’t realize that she was really living to die because it was gone take her down the wrong path.” The song has been met with much acclaim and support, the single has garnered support from WGCI & Power 92 and a host of notable industry figures such as DJ Pharris, Chi Blizz, and video director Chris Adams.

In contrast, P Plus’ Chicago anthem “Chi Holds Me Down” illustrates the love he has for his city. Praised as one of the few artist in the city to earn the respect from all sides, P Plus explains his formula. “I keep it Chicago all the time, that’s what allows me to get the love and respect that I get from Chicago. If you don’t seem like you’re 100% Chicago they don’t respect you.” Everyone from DJ Pharris, Good Music artist Really Doe, and the legendary Twista speak highly of P Plus. Recording artist Really Doe notes that he was especially in awe of P Plus’ work ethic. “What really impressed me about Plus is how hard working he is and his love for the Chi. I have no doubt that he will be a major industry player for not only Chicago but the country when it comes to hip hop. He lives and breathes this.”
