Poppy Roscoe is a four-piece Los Angeles-based Indie-Rock group best known for their adventurous blends of melodic album-rock and psychedelic genre-bending audio-visual experiences.
The band has been described as “What if The Beatles played like The White Stripes”. Resurrected by Izzy Fortune and Jacob Smith in 2023, the band currently produces music and video animations through Toadwart Records and Super D.I.Y. Productions, with marketing and licensing via Tinderbox Music.
Originally an experimental college art-rock project formed by Izzy Fortune in 2015 while he was schooling in Arizona, he wrote a handful of demo songs that would later serve as the basis for a loose project called “The Devilish Demo”, an exploratory semi-concept album that touches on themes of personal isolation, childhood bliss, psychedelic spirituality, rebellious spirits, and coming to terms with the meaning of life.
After a few-year hiatus, Izzy brought the band back together with founding members Adam Pena (Lead Guitar) and Jacob Smith (Drummer/Percussion) in the spring of 2019 to write the band’s second demo tape “One More For Saftey”, a collaboration effort by the group as a whole. As each member was speed across the United States at the time of recording, the project was mostly written in pieces at various studios across the Southwestern United States.
After yet another brief pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Izzy wrote and recorded with Poppy Roscoe the adventurous concept album “Sea Fortune and the Desert Rats”, a bold and experimental rock-opera that’s an amalgam of different genres, culminating in its own full-length movie. Both Adam Pena and Jacob Smith returned for the project, marking the first time the three members had all collaborated in the same space together. The album spawned the band’s first hit single “Freaky People”, which is told from the perspective of a suburbanite who gets involved in counter-culture and eventually converts to being a full hippie; uniquely, the main riff was written on a bass guitar that at the time only had the bottom three strings and the track features an original classical guitar solo performed by Adam Pena.
The accompanying animated mixed-media film for “Sea Fortune and the Desert Rats” was produced entirely by the band, with Izzy doing most of the animation and Jake recording most of the live footage sequences.
Since then, original guitarist Max Meeder and Dahlia Grizzard have joined the band for their latest release “Manzanita”, a down-and-dirty garage-rock concept-album hailing back to the days of wild rockers with a modern flair. The band is currently touring extensively as of 2024, with several shows and performances scheduled.
Future plans include several single releases, several more studio albums, a live album, and a full blown space opera (with accompanying animated film).
Boasting intense stage shows and intricate stories folded into their recordings, Poppy Roscoe has attracted a dedicated global fanbase which continues to grow.
