My ancestors are PURE Melungeons; 3 or 4 of the family lines stem from the first known Melungeons, so I stem from long lost sailors or Mediterranean prisoners of war left on the shores of this country, who mingled into the Saponi Indians.
Even as late as the 1940s, there was movement to have declared Melungeons are not pure white, but there was such a public outcry, that the state of Virginia dropped the plan. Now, it is very popular to be a Melungeon, and thousands of people are trying to claim it as their own heritage LOL. We laugh at the wanna-be. The wannabes buy land down in the Blackwater Valley, to be closer to the past, but much of it remains just like it was. I'm a Melungeon.
