At this stage they were operating under the persona of 'Empire'. Influences of Seattle Rock (Pearl Jam & Foo Fighters) were clearly shown in earlier material. As the band's musical tastes expanded to other genres, including the more alternative side of the English music scene (Gomez and Radiohead) and electronica the music branched out to a new, fresh sound.

In addition to new tastes the band's change in lineup and introduction of Andy on drums, allowed Chris to step up to the microphone and enabled a freer approach to songwriting and performance, as well as a need for a new name, hence 'Pilate'.
