Chicago roots rockers Palliard formed in 2003 -- singer/guitarist Chris Hamsher and multi-instrumentalist Justin Brown first met working office jobs at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in quick succession they recruited bassist Anthony Burton, then with local post-punk unit Forty One Rivers.
Originally dubbed Masthead, the band made its public debut that September -- among the audience members was Jeff Panall, a former member of Songs: Ohia who enlisted to play drums in time for their next gig, their first under the Palliard aegis. Within weeks of his arrival Panall also engineered the group's first recording session, although Palliard would not self-release its eponymous debut EP until mid-'05. ~ Jason Ankeny
