Paintings of Ships were formed in the early weeks of 2009 by Daniel Clancy (guitar and lead vocals), Catherine Wilson (bass and vocals), and Matt Hill (drums). Embracing the dynamics and melodic attack of Nirvana, the noisy soundscapes of Sonic Youth, and the dreamy meanderings of the shoegaze crowd, Paintings of Ships began gigging regularly around London and the surrounding area, and putting Hill's engineering talents to good use, they recorded their debut EP in his front room, which doubled as his home studio. The four-song Shore for Sure was released on CD and as a digital download in 2010, and by the end of that year, the band headed into a recording studio to begin work on their first full-length album. The resulting English Weather appeared in August 2012 and saw the band playing shows across the U.K. in support. 2015 saw the fruits of the band's return to the studio, once again with Hill producing, in the form of the single "Titanium." At the end of 2016, the trio dropped their sophomore album, Blast, which was preceded by the single "Sight of Sirens." ~ Mark Deming
