Oui 3 are Blair Booth (b.
California, USA, vocals, programming), Phillip Erb (b. Switzerland, keyboards) and Trevor Miles (lyrics, rapping). In addition, their debut album featured the formidable rhythmic skills of Youth (Killing Joke, Brilliant, etc.), Jah Wobble, Galliano and the Brand New Heavies. It revealed an obvious debt to PM Dawn, with a flat, distinctively English rapping style. Booth was once a sidekick of Terry Hall of the Specials / Fun Boy 3 (as part of Terry, Blair and Anouschka), while Erb worked alongside Billy MacKenzie (ex-Associates). Together they met unknown rapper Miles, who shared their interest in George Clinton and Lee Scratch Perry. Their speciality was a witty mix of vocals and raps, with clever observations on a series of tightly wound scenarios. ‘Break From The Old Routine’, for example, depicted a collapsing relationship: ‘We ain’t gelling these days - we’re congealing’. They returned to their reggae roots with the 45 ‘Arms Of Solitude’, which featured of all things, an Augustus Pablo mix.
