Building their own instruments from scrap metal, the group played in small community venues. Their sound is described by them as "punk rock hardcore." In September 1993 the group won the first place in the Recife Rock Show. In the next year, they participated in the second edition of the Festival Abril Pro Rock and in its all subsequent editions. In 1996, Chico Science e Nação Zumbi invited the Devotos to open the shows of the second album, Afrociberdelia, in São Paulo. In that year, the video "Punk Rock Hardcore Alto José do Pinho" was nominated for the MTV Video Music Brasil. The first album, Agora Tá Valendo, came in 1997, after BMG Ariola became interested in their work with their presentation at that year's edition of the Abril Pro Rock fest. The album was promoted in a tour which began in 1998's Abril Pro Rock fest, following shows in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília, Salvador, and Belo Horizonte. The band also performed at the CD Expo in Rio de Janeiro. In 1999, now just Devotos, they recorded their second CD, Devotos, with participation by Os Paralamas do Sucesso's Herbert Vianna, Ras Bernardo, and Tony Platão. ~ Alvaro Neder
