Ernest Dickerson got it right the first time. His directorial debut, based on a script he co-wrote with good friend Gerard Brown, turned out to be a classic that introduced the world to characters like Q, Bishop, Steel and Raheem, who were brought to life by a young and talented cast that included Tupac. The gritty drama was shot in Harlem and captured the moral dilemma that many inner city youth experience when it comes to gunplay.
