Rooted more in the alt-pop college sounds that were more prevalent in the mid- to late '80s than the turn of the 21st century, Mo Matching Drapes formed in New Hampshire after recording a series of home recordings made by founding members Paul Bates and Chris Brunelle.
Bates (bass) and Brunelle (guitar) would be joined as a four-piece by Drew St. Aubin on guitar and Jim Wood on drums, and made their stage debut in 1999. As the band began to spread out in the northeast U.S., they created enough of a buzz to secure an opening spot for acts such as the Samples and G. Love & Special Sauce. Likely finding the outskirts of the upper corner of the Atlantic states to be not quite a hotbed of recording company activity or interest, the band relocated to New York City and released their debut full-length, Mo Matching Drapes is the Name of a Band in 2002. Their sound, a cross between late era Dinosaur Jr. and They Might Be Giants, got them a house band gig at a comedy showcase in New York, as well as some local media attention. Their second album, The Dangerous Friendly, was released on Bang Pop! in 2004. Shortly thereafter, the band decided to call it a day, and move on to other projects. ~ Christopher M. True
