If the music of Minisnap bears a certain resemblance to that of New Zealand jangle pop legends the Bats, there's a perfectly reasonable explanation -- Minisnap features the group's lead guitarist Kaye Woodward writing and singing her songs, with at least one fellow Bat sitting in with her in every lineup.
As a founding member of the Bats, Woodward has been playing with the group since 1982, but after nearly two decades she was looking for an opportunity for her own songs to be heard (guitarist and vocalist Robert Scott writes nearly all the Bats' material), and in late 2000, Minisnap made its live debut, with Woodward on guitar and vocals and her longtime bandmate Paul Kean on bass. For some early shows, electronic percussion was provided by a laptop computer, though yet another Bat, drummer Malcolm Grant, would soon replace the machine as a regular member of the group. Minisnap made their recorded debut with the 2002 EP In My Pocket, with another short-form release, March Hare, following in 2004. In time, Minisnap added a second guitarist, Marcus Winstanley from the group the Undercurrents, and this four-piece lineup cut Minisnap's first full-length album, Bounce Around, which appeared in 2008. Woodward, Kean and Grant continue to record and tour with the Bats, and a few Minisnap songs have been known to slip into the Bats' live shows on occasion. ~ Mark Deming
